“It’s too dangerous to try the front door. That must lead to the main area of the building and probably has the most men. We’ll try the side door. But we have to take out that guard. Schultz. Perra. That’s up to you.” I ordered.
They both gave me a nod and disappeared into the brush. I moved my spot to get a better view of the guard. He stood alone in front of a one man door, letting his rifle rest lazily in his hands. The bush to the left of the guard shook only for an instant and than was still again. But it had caught the guard’s attention he raised his rifle and slowly moved towards the bush. As he did this Perra emerged from the tree line and quietly snuck up behind him. Just as the man reached the bush, Perra removed a thin wire from his chest pouch and looped it around the guards neck and held it tightly until the man stopped struggling. Schultz emerged from the bush and gave Perra a quick grin.
We all converged outside the door and made ready to enter the building. Maldonado took point and opened the door first. It opened into a 20-foot hallway with no cover and a staircase at the other end. I didn’t like it. If anyone came down those stairs we would all be sitting ducks. We held for a moment and when no one came, we advanced forward. We reached the stairs and slowly moved up them. The stairs led to a series of walkways that overlooked the main room in the warehouse. Down below were a maze of boxes and crates and several men patrolling the area. There were also several men on the walkways too. To our right was an office, the only room on the second floor. We didn’t get a chance to see what was in the office because the men on the second floor spotted us and opened fire.
“Fall back!” I yelled to my men.
We all back peddled down the stairs. But we weren’t quick enough. Four fragmentation grenades came raining into the hall way and with no cover, we were done for. There was a series of thumps and shrapnel ripped through all of them. I managed to stay alive for only a few seconds after that. Just long enough to see Alhabid come down the stairs towards their lifeless bodies.
